Field Services strives to prevent crime by community-oriented policing and visible patrol methods.
Dedicated to personal safety and the protection of property, this unit strives to prevent crime with community-oriented policing and visible patrol methods in vehicles, on bikes and on foot.
Field Services is comprised of a captain, three patrol lieutenants, three patrol sergeants, and several patrol officers for each shift. The unit is supported by a 24-hour communications center and a Special Events and Training Lieutenant.

ISU Police investigates all criminal offenses on campus and has full power to detain, investigate and arrest.
ISU Police officers investigate criminal offenses on campus and have full power to detain, investigate and make about 1,000 arrests each year. In some circumstances, their authority extends beyond ISU’s physical boundaries.
Officers follow up crime reports through investigative leads, and may issue summons and obtain search warrants. ISU Police works closely with the Ames Police Department, Story County Sheriff’s Department, Story County Attorney’s Office, and community organizations to promote fairness in the criminal justice system. The department has regular contact with the State Division of Criminal Investigation and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Early identification, assessment, and management of individuals and situations that pose a potential threat.
The Threat Assessment and Management (TAM) Team works to enhance the safety and security of all Iowa State students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The team uses a threat assessment investigative approach to identify, assess, and manage individuals who may pose a potential threat to themselves or others, or engage in other problematic behaviors that may adversely impact the campus community. The TAM Team’s primary goal is to mitigate potential threat concerns by working with campus partners to implement appropriate risk management strategies.
